FLOORING INSTALLATION

Services

Wood floor installation and parquet installation by flooring specialists We Love Parquet will ensure the result is the floor you desire — enhancing your living space for years to come.

Preparation — The Key To Hardwood Floor Installation

To ensure your solid timber floor or parquetry is installed to perfection, we believe that preparation is the key.

Ivan Kirton, director of We Love Parquet, says that hardwood installation is a job for a flooring professional. It requires detailed knowledge of the timbers being used and how they enhance the living space. The correct preparation of the subfloor and installation environment is also essential.

A winning wood floor installation or parquet installation requires some specific working conditions to ensure a great result, and that’s what we are looking for.

Steps for Successful Hardwood Installation

In a new project, or for a hardwood floor restoration or repair to be proud of, the following points are important for a hardwood installation or parquet flooring installation.

  • Correct storage of the timber is critical for accomplishing the best results.
  • Timber is susceptible to moisture, so the building must be enclosed and weathertight.
  • Any windows that reveal direct sunlight should be screened to protect the timber flooring as it’s being installed.
  • All plumbing work must be completed before the hardwood flooring installation takes place.
  • Following floor installation, sanding and coating are a must-do for a fine finish. When these finishing products are being applied, access to the area should be limited to only the flooring professionals.

Under the Hardwood Timber Floor

If a subfloor has to be installed before installation of the timber hardwood floor, it must meet certain specifications. These are set by the Australasian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA) and their Solid Timber Flooring Industry Standard.

  • A concrete slab subfloor must be clean, dry and flat. If there are any discrepancies, it has to be levelled to specifications.
  • Moisture vapour protection must be applied before laying the floor over a slab. This can be a polyethylene plastic barrier or an applied moisture vapour barrier.
  • Timber and sheet subfloors need to be clean, dry, flat and level.
  • Subfloors that are enclosed spaces under a building must be dry before the floor is installed. This may require sealed drainage systems and/or soil membranes under the building.
  • Any enclosed subfloor must also include ventilation that meets the National Construction Code (NCC) requirements. It could also call for the installation of a mechanical ventilation system to keep the subfloor space dry.

Sanding — Create a Perfect Surface

ATFA also specifies standards for sanding and coating, including assessment of the floor’s condition before the final sand. This includes cleaning, dust minimisation and filling of nail holes.

Sanding is paramount to a perfect finish — selecting the correct grade of sanding disc ensures the floor has a smooth surface ready for the final coating application.

We Love Parquet uses environmentally friendly equipment that vacuums the fine particles during the process. This attenuates the adverse effects of dust. Find out more about our floor sanding services.

A Flawless Finish

After sanding, the coating is applied. This is where you can specify exactly what you want for tone and effect for the flooring.

Visit We Love Parquet’s wood floor staining colour concept store to learn how you can become involved in selecting a wood stain or polish to personalise your floor.

Whether you’re looking for an oiled finish, or a custom stain to enhance the natural characteristics of the wood — you can discuss it with Ivan and try it out on a sample block before deciding on the final finish.

We Love Parquet tests the stain and encourages you to join in with designing the colour of your wood finish.

With the successful completion of your hardwood floor installation, you will appreciate a floor that is finished to a professional standard and will stand the test of time.

Acclimatisation and Expansion in Timber

Warm, humid or hot climates can affect the appearance and performance of the timber.

Wood is a natural product and will expand and contract in relation to the environmental moisture content. This means that installers need to be aware of the expected moisture content and make allowances for this at the time of installation.

Assessing the Subfloor

The installation of a timber floor is dependent on the assessment and preparation of the subfloor.

You see the finished result, but to achieve that ideal finish, the flooring specialist must spend time prior to laying the floor, assessing the condition of the subfloor. Any potential issues that could affect the laying of the timber must be addressed before the boards go down.

Hardwood timber flooring can be laid over any subfloor, but there are important factors that make a difference to a successful outcome.
